Five Ways to enjoy camper vans in Florida

Adventure+Vans+in+Ocala+National+Forest

Camper vans (or “campervans”) are a ubiquitous staple of outdoor life in the western United States. Camper vans, adventure vans, and overland vehicles of all sorts may have deep roots in the west, but the east coast is the bold new frontier for camper vans and all things van life and Florida is the epicenter of the camper van movement on the east coast.

Here are some of our top picks for ways to enjoy a camper van in the beautiful sunshine state.

1. Beachside Chilling in a Camper Van

You are never more than a two-hour drive away from a beach in Florida. In fact, you can drive on several beaches in Florida. And you can stay overnight on a few, too. We enjoy hanging out at Porpoise Point in Vilano Beach and Peters Point in Fernandina, both of which are within an hour of the FreedomVanGo shop in Jacksonville, FL.

2. Off-Roading in Ocala National Forest

OHV (off-highway vehicles) activities in Florida are truly endless. You wouldn’t think that a state that’s known for Mickey Mouse and sunbathing would have many miles of trails for adventure vans and the like…but you’d be wrong. Ocala National Forest is a great place to get off-road within an hour’s drive of Orlando. Specifically designated OHV trails are available year-round. Plus, there’s plenty of drive-in, off-the-grid camping spots available throughout the forest.

3. Stay Near a Spring

Florida is like a big, porous sponge. The whole state literally sits on top of an underground labyrinth of tunnels and caverns full of most of the state’s fresh water supply. When those tunnels hit the surface, springs form. And they are beautiful. Most large springs in Florida are part of state parks or other publicly available lands. Some, like Ginnie Springs and Juniper Springs (our favorites) offer convenient campsites just a few steps away from the springs and plenty of water-based activities and trails.

4. Hike & Bike

One of the best things about Florida is that is has some excellent cities to explore. And one of the best things about traveling in a conversion van, adventure van, or camper van is that most models are small enough to fit in tight parking spots. Snag a curbside spot in South Beach or hit the town in downtown Orlando. Florida is a happening metropolitan state with plenty to do on the beaten path and off.
